Groutville’s first book club for children was launched at the Luthuli Museum on Thursday last week.
Speaking at the launch, museum director Brian Xaba said the community was very interested in the club.
“We also had a substantial book donation from the Ballito Library so we must thank the KwaDukuza municipality for their help. This will be our first resource centre for the community.”
During the build-up to the launch the museum set up mobile libraries at several primary schools in KwaDukuza.
What they found, according to community liaison officer Zinhle Nyembe, was that proper reading skills are lacking among primary school pupils.
“There is an old saying – if you want to hide something from an African, put it in a book. We need to be the generation that proves that saying wrong. The more you read, the more you know.”
Nyembe said the book club would find creative ways to discuss books.
“We will use drama, songs and art to bring out our ideas. We want to bring back a good relationship between youth and books.”
