Cooking from the heart

Salt Rock-based children's home Hearts that Hope are here to rescue you from total menu burnout.

Planning a menu for a dinner party or family supper can be a stressful affair.
Satisfying fussy eaters and impressing your mother-in-law can sap the enjoyment out of any evening.
Salt Rock-based children’s home Hearts that Hope are here to rescue you from total menu burnout with their brand new cookbook Recipes from the Heart.
The book, compiled by Stella Schroder and Lyndall VanderYacht, contains more than 200 family favourites from North Coast residents.
VanderYacht said they are hoping to use the proceeds from the sale of the books to buy land for bigger premises.
“We want to house and educate 200 children, so this is a start.”
She said the book covers everything from soups and starters, salads and quiches, meaty mains and seafood to dessert, cakes, breakfasts and lunchbox ideas.
“The wonderful thing is the recipes range in difficulty, so there are easy ones for the novices and some gourmet tricks as well. This is our community sharing their family recipes with each other.”
Some well-known names and restaurants submitted recipes, including Yellow Cafe’s Pork Pie, Fry’s Family Foods Gourmet Pizza and even the Courier’s Sunburnt Fingers, Rose Stephenson’s rusks and our foodie, David Hoehler’s Frankfurter Kranz.
The books will be on sale at the Christmas Fair Fund’s Country Fair for R150 each, where some of the chefs will demonstrate their recipes and provide yummy taste testers.
