Drug mules granted bail

More drug trafficing through King Shaka International Airport.

The two people caught with R6.5 million worth of crystal methamphetamine at King Shaka International Airport on October 22 have been granted bail.
The pair, along with a third suspect who was allegedly waiting to receive the drugs, appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court last week.
The state opposed bail on the grounds that it was not in the public’s interest to release people accused of drug trafficking.
“We feel that the public loses faith in the system when people accused in drug cases are released back into society after their arrest,” said SAPS media liaison, Colonel Jay Naicker.
The accused, Lindy Walker (28) and Abel Hermanus du Plessis (29), were granted bail of R100 000 each by the court with strict conditions. They are still in police custody as they have not come up with the bail money.
The third suspect, Sibongile Mthembu (36), was not granted bail. They are due to reappear in court on December 11.
