Driver fakes hijacking

A sub contract driver for South African Breweries claimed that he was hijacked near the Tongaat tollgate.

Two men were arrested yesterday after faking a hijacking near the Tongaat tollgate.

One of the men, a 37-year-old sub contract driver for South African Breweries, claimed that he was hijacked near the Tongaat tollgate on the N2 highway while delivering stock. The truck contained 2156 cases of beer. He opened a false case of hijacking at the Empangeni police station on December 19.

The case docket was transferred to Tongaat police station where it was taken over by members of the Phoenix Crime Intelligence unit.

With the help of the Umhlali K9 unit, the driver was arrested in the Isipingo area on Tuesday. The first arrest led to the apprehension of his accomplice (33). The investigation revealed that the hijacking had been planned beforehand.

The stock, worth R350 000, was recovered at a bottle store in Umlazi.

The two men will be charged for theft and perjury and are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Friday, January 24.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the units for the thorough investigation which led to the discovery.

“We warn the public to not open false cases because our members will leave no stone unturned in investigating such cases,” she said.
