Two Stanger policemen killed in cold blood
Two of KwaDukuza's finest lost their lives on routine patrol early this morning.
Two KwaDukuza police officers were shot and killed at around 1.30am this morning on the R74 near Stanger.
According to SAPS media officer Colonel Jay Naicker, four policemen were returning from Kwamaphumulo last night when they stopped to investigate a red vehicle parked on the side of the road.
“Three unknown men emerged from the bush and immediately opened fire on the vehicle. The constable and student constable seated in the front of the vehicle were immediately killed as the men opened fire on them shooting them in the head,” said Naicker, in a press release.
He said one of the men managed to wrestle a firearm away from a third policeman in the back of the vehicle, while the fourth policean pulled out his firearm and opened fire on their attackers, sending them fleeing into the bushes.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni was shocked when she learnt of the killings.
“It is disturbing that criminals will so boldly attack police officers who are just doing their job. Every day our police officers face the possibility of being killed when they put on their uniform and go out to serve their community. Such attacks on police officers will not deter us from carrying out our mandate and we will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book,” she said.
SAPS has assembled a team to track down the men responsible. Police management are busy contacting the families of the deceased officers to bring them the tragic news.
According to reports on Facebook, one of the deceased was Stanger policeman Const Xulu. Numerous condolences from colleagues and friends have already been posted throughout social media, including the Courier Facebook page.
