Mokoena back in the dock

The policeman accused of murdering two of his fellow officers.

The police officer accused of arranging an ambush in which two of his colleagues were killed, made his second appearance in the KwaDukuza magistrate’s court this morning.

Lieutenant colonel Tholumuzi Mokoena (53) was supported by some of his family members during his brief appearance.

Mokoena was in the police vehicle with constables Thobani Xulu and Sbusiso Mthethwa and a clerk when they allegedly stopped to investigate a suspicious red vehicle parked on the R74 early on Saturday morning, February 1.

It is alleged that three unknown men emerged from the bush and opened fire on the vehicle, killing Xulu and Mthethwa instantly. The clerk is believed to have been asleep when the shooting started.

Xulu’s family was also at the court this morning.

The case was adjourned to give Mokoena time to find legal representation.

He will appear again on February 27 and is currently being held in Cato Manor.
