New liquor act rings changes
New Liquor act allows people in KZN to buy alcohol on Sundays.
The new Liquor Act came into effect last Friday, enabling KZN residents to buy liquor from bottles stores on Sundays.
But there are a few changes to how, when and where bottles stores can operate.
A new licensing application process allows for community participation. This means that community members are allowed to comment on applications for liquor licenses. All other businesses in a 100 metres of the proposed store must be notified of the application as well.
Renewal of licenses will have to be done every year and the application must be made to the Liquor Authority six months before the license’s expiry.
Liquor stores that are within 500 metres of schools and religious institution have been given three years to relocate their businesses.
All Provinces maintain an exclusive mandate over the legislation of liquor licensing. The KZN Liquor Authority is in charge of the regulation in the province.
