Taxis fight over Ballito route

Shots were fired at the Driefontein taxi rank yesterday.

Hundreds of people could not get to work in Ballito today due to taxi violence.
The Dolphin Coast Taxi Association and the Tongaat Taxi Association are fighting over the Driefontein to Ballito route.
Violence began at the Driefontein taxi rank yesterday. Shots were fired between the associations but no one was injured. The police have been guarding the rank since the incident.
Officials from the provincial department of transport and community safety are due to arrive an address the taxi bosses this morning.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson, captain Percy Buthelezi said commuters should find alternative transportation until the matter was resolved.
“It is always unfortunate that the innocent becomes victims of taxi violence. Hundreds of people working in Ballito missed work today because of this feud. I hope it comes to an end soon,” said Driefontein ward councillor, Mzwandile Mdluli.
Mdluli said the area was at a disadvantage because it did not have a bus service or a train so people relied totally on taxis.
