Touring choir to perform in Ballito

The combined choir was well received in the United Kingdom.

Lovers of choral music have a special treat in store this month.

The combined Phoenix and Harare Male Voice Choir from Zimbabwe is currently touring South Africa and has accepted an invitation to stage a concert at the NG Church in Ballito on April 26 at 3pm.

They will then proceed to the Margate Retirement Village on Sunday, April 27, at 3pm.

From there the combined choir is due to give five concerts in Cape Town, including joint concerts with the Cape Town Male Voice Choir and the Cape Town Chamber Choir.

The Harare Male Voice Choir is the oldest existing choir in Zimbabwe. It was formed by members of the Royal Air Force stationed at Cranborne Barracks, in Harare in 1941. The Phoenix Choir, formally known as the Caledonian Society Choir, was formed in 1959.

Over the years, both choirs have toured Zimbabwe extensively, delighting audiences with their particular brands of musical expertise. They have competed against each other at the annual eisteddfod on many occasions.

Owing to a decline in members, the two choirs merged in 2004 and their synergies have resulted in stronger membership and a rejuvenated choir.

In 2011 the choir toured the United Kingdom where it received rapturous applause. This year, the pre-tour concerts in Harare have been very well received.

Tickets will be available at 3@1 at Junction Shopping Mall and Postnet at Lifestyle Ballito at R70 per person. Any tickets not sold will be available at the door on the day of the concert.
