Surfing groms on a roll

The North Coast's best young surfers at the second leg of the KZN Central Surfing trials.

Local surfing teenagers have put in a string of impressive performances in the last few weeks.

This weekend the North Coast’s best young surfers headed to the second leg of the KZN Central Surfing trials at Dairy Beach in Durban.

Salt Rock’s Shane Sykes won the U17 boys final after scoring two eight point rides. Sykes redeemed himself after struggling at the RVCA Junior Challenge in Jeffery’s Bay two weeks ago.

Umdloti resident Bevan Willis came in second place, continuing his good form from the RVCA challenge, where he won the under 16 boys final.

Another Salt Rock local, Richard Kidd finished in fourth place in the under 17 final.

Salt Rock’s Sophie Bell has added another win to her belt after blowing away the competition in the girls U15 category. Bell has claimed three tournament wins in a row, after she won Billabong Junior series under 14 girls category in April and the RVCA Junior Challenge under 14 girls category two weeks ago.

Jade Mets, another Salt Rock surfer, came second in the under 17 girls category after Durban’s Teal Hogg took first place.

Salt Rock’s Calvin Goor claimed third place in the U15 boys category.
