The Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club is finally enjoying a fresh breathe of air after a successful fundraiser.
On Wednesday, May 21 Mo-Zam-Bik hosted a Donkey Derby for the club. The stakes were high as over 120 people placed bets on “donkeys” who raced at the role of giant dice. Each time a donkey crossed the line first, a portion of the money went to the winning table while another portion went to the club.
Dolphins club chairman Kevin Murphy was delighted to announce that R70 000 was raised during the event.
“This helps us tremendously as we are able to pay off some of the debt incurred last year and leave us with some capital for this seasons running costs,” said Murphy.
The night was fun-filled, as tables raised their hands for bets on the donkeys and bid for some rugby memorabilia during the auction.
Murphy is now looking to put a troubled year behind them, where their previous sponsors failed to follow through on their contractual agreements.
“All future fund raising activities will now be earmarked for the development of our ground and clubhouse which I am happy to announce begun in earnest last Monday,” said Murphy.
The club is in the process of building a sports club and has signed a lease agreement at Sugar Rush.
“We are hoping the project will be complete by August 1,” said Murphy.
The club will have two new fields leveled courtesy of Multi Group.
Looking to the future, Murphy hopes to hold more successful fundraisers as the club begins to find its feet and thanked all those involved in the Donkey Derby for all their support.
