Cycling for a cause

Retired pilot decided to cycle the United States of America from west to east coast, to create awareness for Girls and Boys Town South Africa.

A Ballito resident is off an a three-month adventure to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of local children.

Retired pilot Anton van der Merwe flew for South African Airways for 37 years, ending his career as captain of the latest Airbus A340 aircraft.

After reading articles and blogs of people who have cycled for a cause, Van der Merwe decided to cycle the United States of America from west to east coast, to create awareness for Girls and Boys Town South Africa.

He left on Monday, June 9.

“The financial viability of Girls and Boys Town depends to a large extent on public funds. It is only with the financial assistance of donors like Van der Merwe that we are able to sustain our work,” said regional fundraising manager Denise-Ann Wearne.

The association runs three facilities in KZN, including the Tongaat Youth Development Centre, which caters for 55 boys.

Anyone wanting to make a donation contact national helpline on 086 1585 858.

Alternately, make a deposit into Girls and Boys Town SA, Standard Bank, Musgrave, acc number 051207559, branch code 042626 – use your name, surname and telephone number as a reference.
