Fana Khoza rocks local airwaves

When it comes to the music industry, Maphumulo is the heart of Maskandi music.

But Fana Khoza from eMthandeni decided to be different and became the area’s first reggae artist.

The 32-year-old artist initially had a passion for pop music, but when he recorded his first demo in studio, he was told he had more of a feel for reggae.

“The producer told me I would rock the reggae industry,” said Khoza.

Although he is still looking for a record label Khoza’s music has gained some airtime at a local radio station in Durban and he has been performing at Maphumulo municipal events.

“People seem to be enjoying my music. When it is played on Izwi Lomzansi, they call and ask for my contact details.”

His debut album was released last year, called Amayeza (translated ‘traditional medicine’) controversially speaking about why traditional medicine is not effective.

He is currently recording his second album, ‘Send the Spirit to Me,’ to be released next year.

Although Khoza’s music has been generalised as Rastafarian, this father of three boys says he is just an artist.

“This is not my religion, but it is the style of music that I most enjoy.”

Khoza says music comes as naturally to him as speaking.

“Composing songs is how I communicate Without music I cannot speak.”
