Lose yourself in art

The 'No Tomorrow' exhibition set to run at Ballito's Imbizo gallery August 14 until September 30.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

Wise words by Thomas Merton that aptly describe the heart of the ‘No Tomorrow’ exhibition set to run at Ballito’s Imbizo gallery from August 14 until September 30.

Isabel Roos, gallery curator and owner, has brought together five artists: sculptors Marke Meyer, Izidro Duarte, Michael Canadas and Leoni Needham, and the ‘painter among the thorns’, Terri Broll.

Broll, who has a master’s degree in fine art and in clinical psychology, will anchor the exhibition’s wall space with her extraordinarily strong paintings, which she describes as ‘fascination horror’.

She works in oil and wax, the wax giving the work a texture that suggests images that are both disturbing and humorous. The theme and title of the exhibition is ‘No Tomorrow’, which according to sculptor Marke Meyer, was chosen as he and his fellow artists live and create in this way.

“To create, an artist needs to immerse himself in the present. One loses track of time. Hours may pass without the artist being aware of it. When I get into this incredible space, it is as if there is no tomorrow,” he said.

Izidro Duarte agrees and adds that, “creating as if there was no tomorrow encourages him not to let the fear of future consequences deter him from pursuing the work which gains a life of its own in the present moment. “It is liberating,” he said.

The remaining two sculptors, Michael Canadas and Leoni Needham, are the co-founders of The Loop Art Foundry. They have been responsible for casting a great deal of state commissioned sculpture in-between casting the work of more than 400 individual sculptors’ work.

The exhibition will be opened by actress Barbie Meyer at Imbizo Gallery in the Ballito Lifestyle Centre on Thursday the August 14 at 6.30pm. Pop in and chat to the artists.
