Farook Khan chose to launch his new book at the Luthuli Museum last week because of the special connection between the subject and Africa’s First Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chief Albert Luthuli.

Well-known author, former journalist and beauty pageant organizer Khan proudly released his novel, The Goodwill Lounge. The title refers to the first multi-racial restaurant established in Durban in 1926 that was originally called “Peter’s Lounge”.The restaurant was started by the Naidoo family – Sreenivasaloo and his wife Venkattamah – who came to Durban from India in 1894. It was situated in the heart of an area of Durban called ‘the Casbah’.

Chief Albert Luthuli used to go there and became friendly with the owners. He was among many patrons the likes of whom included international superstar Busi Mhlongo, Welcome Msomi, Eric ‘Scaramouche’ Sono, Ndiko Xaba, Mr AM Rajab, Harriet Bolton and Jean Lomberg.

Khan said the people who dined there all played a part in helping to bring about change in the country.

“The book brings alive the characters who created legends, some of whom are very much alive in our hearts and minds. Men and women who used the performing arts and sticks and stones to confront one of the most sophisticated defence forces in Africa, all in the name of liberation,” he said.

Some Groutville residents who also used to frequent the restaurant, attended the launch.

A limited number of copies of the book are available for sale at the museum. Anyone interested in purchasing a copy may contact marketing manager Heidi Gibson on 032-559 6822 or email marketing@luthulimuseum.org.za.
