Qoqulwazi Secondary school, an underprivileged school in Driefontein, was awarded a R100 000 sports donation by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF).

Teacher at the school, Amith Maharaj applied to the NLDTF for the grant in 2012 and his efforts were handsomely rewarded two years later.

“The money was used to buy sports uniforms and equipment for soccer, netball, cricket, volleyball, athletics, table tennis and basket ball”, said Maharaj.

The next step for Qoqulwazi Secondary is to secure funding to build a sports field.

“The pupils are very excited about the new sports equipment but some of the equipment such as the high jump mats, javelins and basketball and netball rings are impractical to transport back and forth to the municipal sports field,” said principal Lydicia Sibiya.

Qoqulwazi Secondary has enjoyed an all-round improved performance in recent months. The pupils are taught English first additional language and competed against English first language schools in several English debate competitions where they won second and third places in two of the competitions.

“A year ago there were rumors of no teaching taking place at the school so we are very proud that we are improving”, said Sibiya.
