Reports are coming in from businesses in Ballito who believe there is a possible scam artist going around town.
The tall, well dressed man approached Slimline Pools and Mowers in Ballito and On Tap Plumbing and Bathrooms.
The man introduces himself as Deon King from Advocate Deon King and Partners.
Kerry Niewoudt from Slimline Pools said the facts don’t add up.
“He came into our shop on Tuesday and asked for our business card and sent me an email with a letter,” said Niewoudt.
The letterhead provides an address in Morningside, Durban with no street name and only states Office Block 2C.
The letterhead design is also coincidentally a letterhead template that is available to download on the internet.
“I told him we do not let the products out of the shop until funds reflect on our statement,” said Niewoudt.
She said she found it strange that the man came to their shop that provides a specialist service and he did not seem to know what he was looking for.
“We saw him go to almost every shop ,” said Niewoudt.
The man drives a silver car with an ND number plate.
Sean Dietz from On Tap Plumbing and Bathrooms said the man sent him a similar letter.
“He said he will pay by EFT and his drivers would come and collect the stock,” said Dietz.
Dietz said the man provided a proof of payment from Absa and the stock was collected this morning (Thursday).
“It looks legit, but we called our bank and it does not seem like the transaction number exists although we are still waiting to confirm if the money is in or not,” he said.
