Westbrook beach boasts amazing rock life and for this reason, has sadly become a target for rock robbers.
On January 31, two men were spotted walking on the beach about 500m south of the Tongaat river mouth, carrying bags full of mussels that they had harvested from the rocks.
One of the men carried a bush knife, with which he had hacked the mussels and other rock life off the rocks.
“Usually these rocks are under water, but during low tide, they are exposed and become an easy target,” said Tony Perkins, whose family has a cottage close to the targeted rocks.
He said that the men who cleared the rocks were heading off to their car parked near the bridge at the river mouth. The incident was reported to the anti-poaching team, but they could not get there in time.
