Peddle power for St Luke’s
Cyclists raise money for St Luke's Home for healing in Stanger.
A group of cyclists have decided that besides the health benefits to them of extensive peddling in the outdoor fresh air, they can also use their sport to help a good cause.
East Rand 2 East Coast is the name of cycling tours that run over a number of days and in various locations. They attract cyclists from all walks of life, who get together to enjoy their sport, see the countryside and at the same time raise money for charities close to their hearts. One of these charities is St Luke’s Home for Healing in Kearsney near Stanger.
St Luke’s Home for Healing is a sanctuary for the mentally and physically challenged and the staff take great care to create a loving and friendly environment for their residents.
“During the tour in December last year, we raised R125,000, which was split between four charities: Thembalami (R30,000), St Luke’s (R25,000), Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary (R25,000) and Society for Animals in Distress (R40,000). The riders pay their own costs to participate in the tour and each rider pledges to raise money and get sponsors on board,” said Julian Bryant, who started East Rand 2 East Coast with his wife, Pascale in 2010.
The couple have a home in Princes Grant and heard that St Lukes’ funding had been cut two years ago (‘Subsidy cut cripples St Lukes’, Courier, December 11, 2013). So they decided to add the charity to their list.
Judy Cropper, the manager of St Luke’s Home of Healing, said they were very grateful for the generous donation.
“The funds will be put to good use in the near future allowing us to upgrade the dining room, so that all the residents can eat together,” said Cropper.
