‘Take a Girl Child to Work Day’ flows into Sembcorp Siza

Young girls taught to dream, believe and achieve.

Sembcorp Siza Water took part in the annual Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day on Thursday, May 28, celebrating the day’s 13th anniversary.

A group of 20 girls from Guzana and Shakaskraal Secondary School spent a day in the workplace as part of an initiative to address the needs and aspirations of girls from grades 10 to 12 and encourage young women to enter the world of business by exposing them to career opportunities available to them.

Under the theme of ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’, Sembcorp management welcomed the excited group to their offices with Graça Machel’s words in mind:

“Girls who are educated, healthy and free can transform their communities and pass on the benefits to their children, and their children’s children.”

“It is important to take education seriously as it is the key to open doors for a student, thereby improving not only their own lives, but enhancing our country as a whole,” said Sembcorp Siza Water managing director, Shyam Misra as he addressed the girls.

He also added that the girls need to be confident of themselves and work hard in order to realise their dreams.

The young ladies were taken on a tour of the Sembcorp Siza Water’s waste water treatment plant and were educated about the processing and testing of waste water, as well as the conversion of the final effluent into recycled water before the girls were given the option to taste the recycled water.

After the tour, the girls visited various departments including engineering, finance and other administration departments for a working experience where they interacted with staff and learnt about the daily activities that take place in each department.
