A working chance for the disabled

Disabled people can now get a qualification in the business sector.

Disabled people who have been counselled at Destiny Youth Development Centre will have the opportunity to earn a qualification within the business sector from Signa Academy in Umhlali.

According to the Signa Academy manager, Aliki Edgcumbe they run learnerships on behalf of many different companies.

“They will not pay a cent, companies will come to us and say we need a certain number of students for learnerships and we source those students for them,” said Edgcumbe.

Charyl Moodley from Destiny Youth Centre said people from the townships around the North Coast can also apply at the college.

“Currently we have about four people who have been counselled at the centre who have written the assessment and started on June 1,” said Moodley.

They will be trained on context, get work experience and a qualification of their choice.

The college is in the iTalk International building opposite Umhlali Preparotory School.

People who want to join the Signa Acadeny for learnerships must be able to study and they will have to write an assessment before they can be accepted into the college.

“Although we mostly need disabled peopled from the age of 16 to 35, anyone who needs a scholarship can apply,” said Edgcumbe.

The college requires a valid doctor’s certificate confirming your disability as part of your application.

For more information contact Edgcumbe on 087 501 0012.
