The Dolphin Coast Classic and Sports Cars Club host a special vintage cars day.
Sasol Salt Rock took car fans back in time with vintage cars on Fathers Day, which saw dads spend a sunny day under the shade of a Morris Minor bonnet.
The Dolphin Coast Classic and Sports Cars Club parked their beloved oldies at the petrol station and in no time the cars were surrounded by dads admiring purring engines from years gone by.
Club chairman, Bert Steele was glad to see the good turnout, which sparked the idea to do this more often.
“We would like to create an annual car show, similar to Cars in the Park in Pietermaritzburg,” said Steele, who is a keen vintage car restorer and collector.
Fellow club member, Douglas Nidd owns seven classics, but his pride and joy is his Bentley.
“The Bentley was in terrible condition, with most of the car in pieces, stacked in boxes, but after a year of restoration, it is now a beauty,” said Nidd.
Dolphin Coast sugar farmer, Bray Heenan was a showstopper when he arrived in his two-tone light green and cream Austin Princess.
“I used to fish for the Proteas all over the world, but after replacing two hips, I got into cars and found this 1962 Austin,” he said.
After four years, the car has been restored to mint condition, with everything kept original.
Moving onto two wheels, Dr Paul Canter kept the crowd entertained with his two classic mopeds.
“I have six mopeds, although only four are runners at the moment, but I love them and all the parts can be bought overseas, so repairing them is not a problem,” he said.
He took his little red Micron moped for a spin, which is one of his favourites and is quite rare, as only 4000 were ever made.
Besides his mopeds, Canter also has a green Morris Minor Pick-Up that he is very proud of and which he uses regularly.
“It is a great machine, never lets me down and it carts around my mopeds,” he said.
So if you have a rusty bucket on four wheels lying in the garden and would like to see it run again or if you are just a classic car enthusiast, join the club by calling Steele on 083 250 9278 and join them on the third Sunday of the month for a spin around town vintage style.
