Stay safe these holidays
When you are travelling to your holiday destination, keep these safety tips in mind.
With the holiday season upon us, it is important to keep you and your family’s safety in mind.
Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue said there are a few safety tips to always remember when travelling to your holiday destination.
“Always ensure that your vehicle and trailer is roadworthy and fit for purpose. Latent vehicle faults are a significant contributor to accidents,” said Herbst.
He said when undertaking a long distance trip, the driver needs to be well rested.
“Take a break along the way. Take as many as you need to. Stop every hour, exit the vehicle and stretch your legs and ensure that you stop in safe, well-lit areas.”
If you are going to the beach, Herbst stresses the importance of only swimming at beaches protected by both lifeguards and shark nets.
“Do not underestimate the power of the ocean here on the North Coast with its strong rip currents,” said Herbst.
Do not forget to apply sunscreen throughout the day even though it is technically winter!
Herbst said you should not attempt swimming after a few drinks as swimming under the influence of alcohol is one of the leading causes of drowning.
“Keep your personal belongings safe when you go swimming. Also secure your holiday properties and your vehicles – criminals are opportunistic and are quick to take advantage of a situation.
“The Dolphin Coast is not exempt of criminal activity so be sensible when you are going anywhere at night and do not walk alone.”
He said you should never assume that an emergency will never affect you or your loved ones, so keep emergency numbers close by.
