Art lovers and locals with big hearts and big wallets gathered at the Imbizo Gallery last Thursday, July 16 for Netcare Alberlito’s Auction for a Cause to celebrate Mandela Day.
Local artists Stephen van der Schyff and Josee Pelser donated some of their work to be auctioned off and the proceeds went to the Rose Zwane Orphanage in Lindelani, KwaDukuza.
The auction started on an entertaining note with two bidders going head to head for Van der Schyff’s colourful township painting. The first bidder bought the painting for R2 000 but then donated it back, where the second bidder settled on R1 500 for the artwork.
It was also the first time that former South African Jennifer Newman-Fox, who lives in Oxfordshire, England had exhibited in the country. She made a series of three Mandela paintings, two of the African continent and a beautiful rhino and elephant that were on auction.
Rose Zwane from the orphanage, gave a heartwarming speech on how she started the organisation and thanked everyone who had helped them to get by every day.
“At the moment there are 17 children at the orphanage, but more children arrive during school holidays,” said Zwane. “We are in desperate need of more space. We want to buy the plot next to the house, but it is too expensive.”
Zwane said she would not be able to manage without the support of initiatives like Alberlito’s auction.
“Every little bit helps,” said Zwane.
