Emerging contractors build towards success through iLembe Chamber of Commerce programme
The initiative aims to create legitimate opportunities for emerging contractors by equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to compete for work.
A programme launched in response to construction mafia intimidation and extortion on the North Coast has helped another 12 emerging contractors develop their businesses.
The iLembe Emerging Contractors Programme celebrated its largest graduating group to date at a ceremony on Wednesday, October 14.
iLembe Chamber of Commerce CEO Cobus Oelofse said the programme grew out of the iLembe Business Stability Initiative, established by former KwaZulu-Natal MEC Sihle Zikalala.

“This programme was created in response to the construction mafia that was determined to get a foothold locally,” said Oelofse.
The initiative aims to create legitimate opportunities for emerging contractors by equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to compete for work.

Oelofse said this was particularly important on the rapidly developing North Coast, where construction activity continues to create opportunities for local businesses.
Construction Industry Development Board representative Mzwandile Mngadi stressed the importance of registration, compliance and keeping documentation up to date.

Representatives from the KZN Master Builders Association and Siza Water encouraged graduates to continue developing their businesses.

Among them was Thandeka Malinga of Defyn Dezign, who said the programme had opened doors for her company and strengthened her understanding of workplace safety.

“Safety is the core foundation of your project. It is important to take care of your workers as well as your work site,” she said.
Malinga hopes to share her knowledge with aspiring contractors in her community.
