Keeping your home fresh and trendy does not have to cost a fortune with a few simple touch ups.
Ballito based interior guru, Grant Horak is busy giving a Zimbali home a new look, which will make the home a true trendsetter.
“The best part of trends today is that there is no real trend,” said Horak.
“Never before could you not follow a trend, which is what makes it so exciting, as now you can just choose elements you like,” he said.
He does warn however not to mix too many styles, as this can quickly become messy.
“The biggest mistake is to have too many different rooms,” he said.
“Choose an interior look that suits the style of the house and stick to that look throughout the house.”
The Zimbali house is going for cool, fresh, seabreeze feel.
“The whole house is going white, to give it a lighter feel,” said Horak, while walking through the home which is laced with mahogany.
“Not only is it very popular to go white, it is also better suited to our coastal climate.”
The high ceilings used to be characterised by dark trusses, which are now lit up with a clean, bright, white coat of paint.
All the mahogany furniture and chandeliers are going white, leaving just the stunning intricate and unique doors in the dark wood as a contrast keeping in line with the monochrome look.
Horak emphasised the importance of buying individual, quality furniture pieces.
“Furniture are not like clothes that you change often. Rather wait and save money to buy something unique, because you will use it your whole life.”
When it comes to bathrooms, lose the walls and open up your bathroom area.
“Why have all these little cubbyholes, break down the wall and glass, to keep the free, open feel.”
Horak said shutters are very popular, but that one should choose them with caution.
“Shutters can look very hard in a room that is tiled and they do not absorb sound the way a curtain would. Also, shutters never close completely, which is not ideal for a bedroom.”
Horak said that if you need some glam, add touches of gold, but keep it limited because the line between glam and kitsch is very fine.
So, get your white paint out, break down your bathroom walls and get your house back in style.
