Home and Garden: How to spot a drought tolerant plant

When in drought, go for these plants.

You know that feeling when you get to a nursery and cannot remember that long, Latin name of the plant your friend said will survive these dry conditions?

Leave the complicated names for the landscapers and rather learn how to spot indigenous, drought tolerant plants, by looking out for three characteristics:

1. Colour: Grey or silver leaves will reflect light better than dark leaves. They will therefore not get as hot and will sweat less, meaning they lose less water.

2. Texture: Leaves that have a shiny or waxy appearance are also generally drought tolerant.

3. Shape: Look for long, thin leaves or lots of tiny leaves as they move around more easily than bigger, broader leaves, keeping them cool and providing less surface area for the sun to catch.

Happy gardening.
