Shack burns down and boyfriend assaulted
Family escapes burning shack, but lost everything else.
A young Nkobongo family was lucky to escape without injury on Friday morning, when their shack burnt down.
Gcotyelwa Manquma (19), Simgcinile Mdishini (19) and their baby girl Asive Manquma (2) were asleep in the shack when Manquma woke to find one side of their home engulfed in flames.
“I woke Simgcinile and we tried to extinguish the fire. We thought we had achieved this and that the fire was out, so he went to buy himself a cigarette and I went to the toilet,” said Manquma.
When she returned she found the fire had reignited and while they tried to put it out, they failed.
“We lost everything, clothes, food, furniture and all our important documents were burnt to ashes,” said Manquma.
They believe the fire was caused by a candle. After the incident some community members accused Mdishini of trying to kill Manquma by burning her in their shack. He was assaulted but escaped with severe injuries to his face.
Nothando Mlotha from Umthombo Care Centre said they have managed to find temporary accommodation for Manquma and her child.
“The challenge we are facing is getting food and clothes for her and her child. If any one could donate for this family it will be highly appreciated,” said Mlotha.
