Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa recently said transformation would only become a reality once young people learn to empower themselves.
“Take advantage of the opportunities made available to you and utilize them to empower yourselves to move ahead by acquiring skills, knowledge and experience,” said Ramaphosa in an address to young people from Ndwedwe and surrounding communities on Saturday, August 8.
Four days later, Sembcorp Siza Water (SSW) launched an opportunity for young people to empower themselves through education and change their own future.
Celebrating 20 years of Sembcorp utilities, the company launched the Sembcorp Siza Water Bursary Fund.
Two students have already benefited from the bursary this year. Buyi Ntuli, a final year financial information systems student at the Durban University of Technology and Vikash Diplal, a second year BCom accounting student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, have had this year’s study fees and textbooks paid for. They are also given part-time jobs during holidays to gain work experience.
“It takes a great weight off my shoulders, knowing that I will be able to provide for my mother and sister in the near future,” said Diplal, who has aspirations of becoming a chartered accountant.
Ntuli thanked SSW for giving her a future and said that a lot of people wanted to study further but did not have the finances to do that.
SSW managing director, Shyam Misra said the fund was currently R230 000 strong and would benefit about five full-time students in 2016. He said bursaries were awarded per year and not necessarily for an entire degree or diploma.
Application forms are available on the Sembcorp Siza website.
