Road deaths highest in Africa
The number of road traffic deaths stabilised despite an increase of vehicles on the road.
About 1.25 million people die each year as a result of road accidents.
If you live in Africa, you have a higher chance of dying on the roads than anywhere else in the world.
This is according to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global status report on road safety for 2015.
Despite the progress that has been made in terms of road safety, WHO said that road accidents still take an unprecedented toll on low-income countries.
Africa has the highest death rate per capita with 26.6 per 100 000 deaths.
Road accidents are the number one cause of death for people between the age of 15 and 29.
Motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians are particularly vulnerable, making up 49% of road traffic deaths.
The report also found that some vehicles sold in 80% of countries, failed to meet basic safety standards.
