Young Ballito sailors claim silver at provincial Mirror championship
The Funke brothers finished with 26 points overall and a nett score of 17 after eight races.
Palm Lakes brothers Gust (13) and Kai (11) Funke sped their way to second place in a provincial sailing showdown last weekend.
The Curro Salt Rock pupils, representing Point Yacht Club, finished no lower than third in their seven counting races at the Mirror SAS KZN Regional Championship.
With Gust at the helm and Kai as crew, the brothers finished with 26 points overall and a nett score of 17 after eight races. Points are awarded according to finishing position, with the lowest combined score determining the winner.
Henley Midmar Yacht Club’s Mark Flack and Ita Gebuza claimed the title with nine nett points, winning six of the eight races. Point Yacht Club’s Jerome Vermaak and John Alan Harding finished third.

“The event was really fun sailing with Kai,” said Gust.
“We had good wind and tough conditions on the first day and lighter on the second day.”
Kai also enjoyed the competition, particularly the calmer conditions on Sunday.
“The conditions were good but strong on Saturday. Sunday was better for me,” said Kai.
“Next I am focusing on youth nationals, school exams and Mirror Nationals at the Vaal Dam in December.”
