Whale carcass removed from Umdloti nets

Tiger shark also released from nets.

Umdloti beach has been closed for the day after a decomposing whale carcass washed into the shark nets early this morning.

KZN Sharks Board head of operations, Mike Anderson-Reade said Sharks Board officials towed the eight metre long adolescent humpback whale carcass 13 kilometres offshore and also freed a 2,5 metre long tiger shark that got entangled while scavenging off the carcass.

Anderson-Reade said there should not be any more sharks hanging around because the food source has been removed but the beach will remain closed for the rest of the day and possibly tomorrow just to be safe.

He said he recieved his first call about the whale carcass this morning at 5.15am and is certain the whale was already dead when it washed into the nets because it was not there when they patrolled on Friday morning and there was no way it could reach that level of decomposition in such a short time.

Umdloti Beach may only re-open on Monday morning, but Anderson-Reade said they will only make that call after tomorrow morning’s patrol.
