New rules for licence renewals

A new regulation impacting your vehicle licence will come into effect on November 1.

Regulation 32A of the National Road Traffic Regulations states that anyone wanting to register a vehicle, renew licence discs or driving licenses or complete a transaction for the NaTIS System will have to provide address details.

This might not sound like a big thing, but if you rock up at the motor licensing offices without residential proof, you won’t be helped.

An amendment to regulation 25(7) states that if a person has not provided proof of their physical and postal address by the insertion of regulation 25(7)(i), a licence disc will not be issued.

If you are a driver or a company with a fleet of vehicles, you need to supply the following:

1. Full names, date of birth, identity number, and business registration number, along with any form of acceptable identification

2. Proof of postal and residential address, by means of any utility account. If you are not the person in whose name the utility account is issued, an affidavit or affirmation declaring that the person resides at the address plus the utility account should be attached.

3. In the case of a person who resides at an informal settlement, a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming the postal and residential address of such person.

People also have to complete an NCP form along with the above. This form is available at all licensing authorities or online.
