Seniors cleaned out

Westbrook Retirement Village residents were shocked to see their former chairperson handcuffed last week, only to then find their bank account had been emptied.

The former chairperson was arrested for alleged fraud on October 16, was released on bail the same day and is back in the village. She appeared in KwaDukuza magistrates court on October 19. She has not entered a plea and the case was remanded to November 30.

In the meantime, the villagers are trying to save what is left of their money and have welcomed a new committee. Rosa van der Merwe is the new chairperson and is dedicated to improve the image of the village and their bank account.

“We were devastated to find out that the money donated to us over the years by kind people had disappeared. For this reason, we urge everyone who has donated money in the past three years, to contact us so that we can hand it over for investigation,” said Van der Merwe.

“From now on, the village finances will be open and transparent, so that the people know what happens to their money.”

Treasurer Dulcie Behrens said sponsors or donors should only contact Louis or Rosa van der Merwe.

“We have set up a new number, which will be the only contact number for any and all queries. The new number is 061 772 1551 and the phone will be manned by either Louis or Rosa.”

The village has linked up with the BP Garage in Ballito for a fundraising initiative, which sees 10 cents donated to them for every litre of petrol you buy. All you need to do is get a sticker either from the village or from the garage to display on your windshield.

With a little help from everyone, the golden oldies are bound to be back on their feet in no time.
