KwaDukuza lifeguard drowns on duty
A young lifeguard drowned an hour before he was supposed to sign off on Saturday.
A 19-year-old lifeguard mysteriously drowned on Saturday afternoon at Tinley Manor Beach.
According to KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent Bongani Xulu, the seasonal lifeguard disappeared from his board while paddling in the sea.
“The two lifeguards on duty, Mdu Mayeza and Bongani Mulundi went for a paddle as normal at about 4pm, before they were meant to sign off at five. When Mayeza turned around to paddle back in, he saw Mulundi’s board just floating in the water,” said Xulu.
Xulu said they found Mulundi in the water and brought him to shore, but he was unconscious.
“The lifeguards immediately started CPR until the paramedics arrived, but it was too late.”
Xulu said Mulundi was part of the group of seasonal lifeguards filling in for two weeks, while the full-time lifeguards were away on training.
Mulundi’s contract would have ended yesterday.
