A woman who was killed on the N2 highway on Sunday night near Sibaya may have been trying to commit suicide.

Umdloti resident Shelley Bezuidenhout said that she and her husband were driving home at around 9pm when their headlights illuminated a woman kneeling in the road in front of them.

“My husband swerved just in time and just missed her but unfortunately she was hit by the car behind us. There was nothing they could do, it was terrible. She wanted to die.”

Bezuidenhout said she wanted to assist the driver of the vehicle if they needed a witness to the accident.

“We saw that a number of other cars had stopped so we kept going because it is a dangerous area but I would like to help if at all possible,” she said.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated by  the Umhlali police.

“It is alleged that on November 1, at approximately 9.20 pm, a body of a woman was found in the middle of the road knocked by a car.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” he said.
