Tragedy struck a family when a mother and father drowned at a non-swimming beach between Zimbali and the Tongaat River mouth on Saturday afternoon while their two daughters nearly suffered the same fate.
Chris Botha from Netcare911 said the family was swept out to sea.
“According to members of the public, the mother and the two daughters, aged 25 and 41, were swimming when they got into trouble,” said Botha.
The dad jumped in to help, but was also swept into deeper waters.
Members of the public and lifeguards called to the beach brought the family to shore. However the father and mother had drowned and were declared dead on the beach by paramedics.
“The 41-year-old daughter is in a serious condition with near drowning symptoms while the 25-year-old daughter was resuscitated on the beach and was transported to hospital.
Meanwhile all KwaDukuza beaches were closed on Saturday afternoon with lifeguards attending the memorial of a lifeguard that drowned last weekend.
