Father dies at Ballito Park Run
The 45-year-old man is thought to have suffered a heart attack.
Sorrow struck the Ballito Park Run on Saturday morning when a 45-year-old man taking part in the 5km trail run collapsed and died near the finish.
Martin Willis, a husband and father from Ballito was known by those around him to be fit and healthy when he had a heart attack while running in the nationwide event, held at Sugar Rush Adventure Park.
Michael Galloway, a friend and employee of Willis, who worked closely with him for three and a half years at web-based solutions company, WG2K, said that his death came as a complete shock to all who knew him.
“Martin had no known health conditions, so his death is a huge shock to everyone,” said Galloway, who said that Willis collapsed with a presumed heart attack.
Widely loved by many in the community, Willis’ death triggered an outpouring of condolences for his devastated family.
On the Meet My Neighbour Ballito Facebook page, Galloway’s wife Jessica wrote: “We are so devastated. Martin was one of the best husbands and fathers out there – this breaks my heart”.
One of the founders of Park Run South Africa, Bruce Fordyce said that Willis’ death was a tremendous tragedy.
“Our hearts go out to the family of Martin Willis for their loss, and we want to offer counselling to them, and anyone else who may need it,” said Fordyce, who added that Willis received the best possible medical attention within seconds of collapsing, but attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.
An open memorial service will be held for Willis and his grieving family on Friday at 2pm at Umhlali Country Club for anyone who would like to pay their respects.
