The single buoy mooring floating hose that appeared on Umdloti’s South Beach last week has been removed.
Subtech operations manager, Gert Muller said the pipe usually connects to a vessel.
“This one would probably have been used for fending in the Durban harbour and was possibly dislodged during the rough seas last week.”
Who the hose belongs to remains a mystery, as no one has claimed it.
SMIT Amandla Marine sent a team to the beach to investigate the orphaned hose in order to remove it.
Supported by the tug ‘SMIT Siyanda’, the team were able to successfully connect the hose to a rope, and tow it off the beach and into the Port of Durban on Tuesday.
The black and orange hose will be examined and a decision made about safe and environmentally friendly disposal.
