Police seize illegal firearms in KZN
Within a week, police arrested 45 suspects.
In the run-up to the festive season, police stepped up operations across the KwaZulu-Natal province to seize illegal firearms and ammunition.
Although many firearms have been recovered in the hands of criminals over the past few weeks, it still remains a concern for police that criminals are using these firearms to commit crimes.
During operations conducted from December 6 to December 12, 44 firearms were recovered across the province.
This included two homemade firearms, a shotgun, a rifle and 40 pistols.
A total of 369 rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
Police arrested 45 suspects charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
All these firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish if they were used for any crime in the country and all of the arrested suspects have appeared in various Magistrates Courts across the province.
