Lifeguard’s Netherlands dream
Tongaat lifeguard looks forward to the World Lifesaving Championships in the Netherlands.

A humble lifeguard from Hambanathi in Tongaat will be jetting off to the Netherlands for the World Lifesaving Championship in September, if he can raise the necessary funds.
Rodney Dlomo (44) has been selected as a technical official for the championship that will start on September 1 and run until September 18.
This is the third time he had been called to take part in the championship, however he missed those held in Egypt and Australia, due to a lack of sponsors. Dlomo has been a lifeguard for the past 20 years and he is based at North Beach, Durban, where he is a member of the Huletts Durban Life Saving Club.
His main passion is training children to swim, and he gives free daily swimming training to more than 40 children in Hambanathi, with pupils from Magwaveni and Frasers as well.
Going to the championship means a lot to Dlomo. He said he would also gain further experience and would be able to pass on his knowledge to the children he trains.
Dlomo said he believes that in the Ilembe region there is a big need for swimming pools, especially in the townships, because there are people like him who are willing to help and teach those who would like to swim.
“By doing that, the number of the people drowning off our beaches will decrease, because people will be able to take care of themselves when they are in the water.”
As much as Dlomo is excited about the championship, he might miss this one too, because he cannot afford the cost of going to the Netherlands, which will include the plane ticket and accommodation.
He appeals to anyone who can assist to call him on 083 595 0517 or 079 359 4434 or email him at vusidlomo@gmail.com.
