Cops shot in attempted prison break

The prisoners were being held at Inyoni SAPS in Mandeni.

Two on-duty police officers were shot and critically wounded by two prisoners who tried to escape from the police cells at Inyoni SAPS in Mandeni today.

SAPS KZN spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane said the officers visited the cells at 5.15pm when one of them were reportedly overpowered and his firearm taken.

“The prisoner shot both officers. One officer retaliated and fatally wounded one of the prisoners. The other prisoner managed to escape,” said Zwane.

“One of the officers was shot three times in the stomach and airlifted to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital and the other was shot in the face and transported by ambulance to Netcare Alberlito Hospital” said Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue.

He said both officers were in a critical condition and first stabilised at Isithebe Clinic before being taken to hospital.

Zwane said the service pistol was recovered from the deceased prisoner and a case of robbery and attempted murder had been opened.

He said the deceased man was 23 years old and in custody because he was believed to have been responsible for a number of robberies in the area.
