“We want more jobs, less hunger”
A group of people marched in Stanger reacting to objections to the mall development which they hope will provide jobs.
A group of about 300 unemployed young people from impoverished areas around Stanger took to the streets on Thursday, February 11 to voice their frustrations.
The KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) council passed a resolution in January for the proposed development of a new mall in Stanger which is expected to create hundreds of new jobs.
The group of marchers, reacting to objections to the mall development, allegedly raised by a group of Stanger businessmen, handed over a memorandum to KDM in which they demanded to be treated equally and not be discriminated against.
Deputy mayor, Dollie Govender received the memorandum and will present it to council.
Ben Masondo from ward five, Lindani, led the march that started at the King Shaka Centre at 9.30am and finished an hour later at the KwaDukuza municipal building on the corner of King Shaka and Chief Albert Luthuli Streets.
He said there were thousands of unemployed people, not just in Lindani, but also in Etete, Groutville, Thembeni and Doringkop who lived in hope that the mall development would provide employment.
