How to dress your baby bump with flair

Dress comfortably but in style when pregnant.

Pregnancy is a magical experience for most women. However, finding presentable loose-fitting clothing for that expanding girth can be difficult.

Image and fashion consultant, Lynne McMaster said maternity wear is all about the right fabric.

“Whatever you wear, it has to be comfortable. First thing is to check the material. Go for cool cotton with a little lycra or elastine for that extra comfort,” said McMaster.

She said during the first few months you might feel fat, but not yet pregnant.

This is the time when you can just buy clothes you love, one size bigger than usual.

“If your trousers start feeling a little tight, tie back a thick elastic band or hair bobble through the trouser button hole. Double it over and hook it over the button. Wear long tops to hide this.”

When it gets to the stage where you start showing, it is time to invest in a few essential items.

“Good underwear is a must. Your bra size will change, so you need to get the correct fit. Well-fitted underwear can work wonders and hide a lot, so invest here.”

On the clothing front, McMaster said the golden rule is less is more.

“The more fabric the less flattering you look. When choosing bulky items, what you gain in comfort, you give up in style. Rather go for fitted clothes in darker colours that hug your tummy and show off your curves.”

She said if you are feeling ‘hormone fat’, emphasise other areas of your body such as your shoulders, arms or legs.

“V-neck or low, round necklines are the most flattering for your bust. Draw the eye to the neckline with a statement necklace.”

McMaster suggested going for tunics with dark, skinny jeans, which you can dress up with heels or dress down with sneakers. She said you essentially need no more than three, slim bottoms (jeans, shorts and a skirt), maximum two dresses (not shorter than knee length), a few tops (shaped kaftans are great) and a good pair of leggings.

“Do not skimp on leggings. Drunk people, children and leggings always tell the truth. Remember this. No white leggings as they will show your hail damage. Black, thick leggings are a win.”

If you know your size, she said buying online will give you more maternity wear variety at often quite reasonable prices. Her favourites are Spree, Meoli, Annabella and Mr Price. Ballito’s Lulu is great for those off-the-shoulder dresses.
