Cycling academy in jeopardy
Cycling academy urgently needs a training venue.
The land used by a keen group of athletes including cyclists, skateboarders and runners, has been turned into a sugar cane field, leaving them stranded and desperate for another venue.
Caring about your community and standing up for change is what Gxoba Istibulo Academy for Cycling Development in Shaka’s Head is all about but now that dream hangs in the balance.
When the Courier visited the Academy in October 2015, founder Goodman Manqele was teaching the children how to fix their broken bicycles (Pedal power for kids, North Coast Courier, October 15, 2015)
The cycling academy is a non-profit organisation from Shaka’s Head, that keeps 50 young, underprivileged athletes (ages six to 35) off the streets by allowing them to participate in an interesting sport, other than soccer.
The academy kicked off the 2016 season on February 15 uncertain of their future without a permanent training facility.
Last year, a farmer generously offered a section of his farm for the academy to use for training on a temporary basis, but in December 2015, the agreement came to an end and the athletes had to pack their bags.
“We wrote a letter to our ward councilor, Jethro Banda and to KwaDukuza municipal manager, Nhlanhla Mdakane to ask for a cycling track and skate park,” said acting coach, Dumisane Ndzimakwe.
He said the academy was currently using a piece of land next to Umhlali Country Club, opposite the Multi Group site, but again, that was only temporary.
The academy appreciates the support of the Ballito community and Ndizmakwe thanks Ballito residents for their contributions.
“We have been given seven BMX bicycles, some gloves, helmets, tyres, bicycle chains and spare tubes and welcome the Ballito community’s continued support.”
Those who wish to make a donation can call Dumisane on 079 118 5756 or Manqele on 073 423 0605.
