New voting wards for Dolphin Coast

Know your ward and where to register for the local elections.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) added two new wards to the Dolphin Coast last year, splitting the Ballito and Salt Rock areas into four wards, causing confusion for voters.

Ward 6 councillor, Colin Marsh said despite the MDB’s mandate “to avoid as far as possible the fragmentation of communities”, they have split Ballito in half.

“The split was done to even out the number of registered voters within the municipality. The IEC benchmark stated that the maxinum number of registered voters per councillor cannot be more than 4500. We had 6500 voters in ward six, therefore everything south of Ballito Drive including Avodale, Seaward, Zimbali and Driefontein now falls into the new ward 21. Everything west of the R102 including Shakaskraal, Compensation, Palm Lakes and Tinley Manor moved from ward 22 to ward 28.”

Ward 22 councillor Malcolm Hubner said it is crucial for voters to know which ward they belong to and where to register for the upcoming, local elections.

“Diarise March 5 and 6 as well as April 9 and 10 as the days to check and register in your ward.”

Ward six residents will need to go to the Ballito Library to register and check their status, ward 22 residents go to Salt Rock Library or Sizani School, ward 21 residents register at Townsend Park and ward 28 at the Tinley Manor Baptist Church hall.

He said people need to be proactive with these local elections and get involved.

“We are on fire. We are hopeful for change and need you to get excited with us and vote. Bring your friends and family, check if you are registered and vote to make a difference. Every vote counts. Your vote counts,” said Hubner.
