Sun power for Alberlito

Ballito’s Alberlito Hospital is the first coastal Netcare hospital to be powered by the sun’s rays, thanks to the 740 newly installed solar panels on their roof.

Alberlito technical services manager, Richard Speares said they are proud to say that the solar panels, installed by Novo Domus, cover about 50% of their daily load.

“Netcare is very serious about sustainability efforts and we are the best electricity saver in the Netcare group. We have installed energy efficient lighting in the hospital, recently acquired two boreholes and we now have the solar panels that deliver 240kW of power,” said Speares.

He said due to the drought, their main focus this year is to reduce their water usage by 50% with methods such as re-using their internal water.

“Businesses should collaborate with their staff and gain their commitment by educating and instilling a culture in them to be energy and water wise. Having our staff’s buy-in to be more sustainable is a must. We have constant staff awareness reminders to save electricity and water such as using air cons wisely, which is a massive electricity thief.”

He said they have already saved over R1 million in a year on electricity alone, which is equivalent to a quarter of their annual usage.

“Together we can save costs at work and home and preserve our environment, whist not compromising patient care or quality of life. Collectively we can make a difference – one light switch at a time.”
