KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has ordered an investigation into the accident on the N2 Zinkwazi on Friday evening involving one of his bodyguards that claimed the lives of two people.

In a statement Mchunu, said he was shocked to learn about the deaths. But that there were many unanswered questions and confusing reports around numerous accidents along this route.

“It is for this reason that I have instructed my special advisor on good governance, Advocate Linda Zama, to liaise with law enforcement agencies such as the police and Road Traffic Inspectorate [RTI],” he said.

Mchunu said they hoped the police would find the driver of a truck that reportedly drove away during the accident.

“It is important to establish how many people were involved in an accident and whether there are any eyewitnesses who may assist.

“We also want to establish circumstances surrounding a Toyota Yaris which was also involved in an accident resulting into unfortunate death of two passengers. It is

also alleged that a blue car veered off the road into the oncoming traffic,” he said.

Mchunu said his office would assist the transport department to locate the families of the deceased so he could visit them.

“We also want to visit other victims who are in hospital.

“Our hearts are with families and friends of the victims during this difficult period. We want to assure the families that we are taking this matter very seriously and my special advisor will be in contact with all the families, ” he said.

KZN Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Zinhle Mngomezulu said details of the accident were unclear. She said Mchunu’s bodyguard claimed to have been hit by a truck.

“He said he hit a truck but there was no truck. The story is incomplete.”

This morning the DA also expressed its shock over the accident, calling for the banning of ‘blue light’ brigades.
