Councillor on hot seat
Councillor Mzwayi Mdluli said if the community have their own candidate, they must say so and let the community vote decide.
Residents of Driefontein, ward 21, claim to be unhappy with their councillor, Mzwayi Mdluli, and the four candidates nominated by the ANC for the council seat in the forthcoming local government elections.
An ANC member, who asked to remain anonymous, described Mdluli as a person who does not want to give other people a chance to be a councillor, although he had failed to bring development in the area. He said the community preferred Wiseman Bhila over any of the four chosen candidates.
“On Saturday, a KwaDukuza municipality van was used to announce a public meeting and when we got there, it was an ANC meeting. Mdluli and his supporters wanted the community to vote for the best candidate to be a councillor. We could not allow that to happen and we will never. We do not want him and his supporters,” said the angry member.
Driefontein is a small area in upper Tongaat, with no RDP houses and no municipal water. Most of the people live in shacks or mud houses, many in bad condition.
“There are certain members of the party that are not allowed to attend ANC meetings in the area. We have no membership cards. Only those who are friends and relatives of Mdluli are holding meetings of the ANC,” said the resident.
He claimed that four people nominated for the council seat are all friends and supporters of Mdluli.
Approached for comment, Mdluli said if the community have their own person that they like, they must say so and let the community vote decide.
“Everything we do, we are following ANC processes. If someone wants to do things in a different way, that person will feel left out. Follow the correct processes and your concerns will be heard,” said Mdluli.
He said he knows the people who are leading the protest and some of them have personal problems with him.
