Countdown to riveting schoolboy rugby

Umhlali Preparatory kicks off the Kersney Easter Rugby Festival on Thursday morning at 9:30 against the U13 KZN Development XV

Fans of schoolboy rugby are in for a treat this weekend as ten top sides from all over the country lock horns this Easter weekend at Kearsney College in Hillcrest at the ninth annual Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

Ballito’s Umhlali Preparatory kicks off the festival against the KZN U13 Development XV on Thursday morning at 9.30am in the first primary school game of the weekend.

Five matches are played per day, preceded by a match between a local primary school and the KZN U13 Development side on Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

The other two local primary schools are Pelham Senior Primary School and Highbury Preparatory.

There are two first-timers in this years line-up, including Maritzburg College, Hoërskool Noord-Kaap from Kimberley.

Three of KZN’s top five sides can be seen in action this weekend. Maritzburg College, Kersney and Glenwood all have their eye on top honors and will be giving the other seven sides a taste of KZN grit.

Schools represented are Dr EG Jansen from Boksburg, HTS Middelburg, Selborne from East London, Dale College from King Willioams Town, Hoërskool Framesby from Port Elizabeth, SACS from Cape Town and KZN sides, Maritzburg College, Kersney and Glenwood.

Three Sharks Academy bursaries, consisting of a Sharks Academy contract and n academic tuition bursary, will be awarded straight after the last match of the festival to three players who show great potential.

Entry into the grounds is R50 per car or R20 per pedestrian and huge crowds are expected as usual.
